If you refer to the number of girls as "g", cats as "c", kittens as "k", and the total number of legs as "l", then you can say:
l = 2g + 4c + 4k
Now, you know that every cat has seven kittens, which means:
k = 7c
So you can take that value and plug it in to the equation:
l = 2g + 4c + (4 x 7c)
= 2g + 4c + 28c
= 2g + 32c
You also know that each girl is carrying 7 cats, which tells you:
c = 7g
and that too can be plugged in:
l = 2g + (32 x 7g)
= 2g + 224g
= 226g
Finally, you are told that there are 7 girls, so you can plug that in to get the final answer:
l = 226 x 7
= 1582
So there are 1582 legs altogether.
You could also restate that by saying:
l = 2×71 + 4×72 + 4×73
∴ l = 14 + 196 + 1372
∴ l = 1582

33222....i think..please tell me if its right! you are wrong I got 10992 7 girls + bus driver = 16 legs, 1 backpack has 56 cats in total (49 small cats and the 7 large cats) there are 49 backpacks in total.. so (56 x 49 = 2744) - Then to find out how many legs... (2744 x 4 = 10976) And add the other 16 legs (7 girls + bus driver) so... 10976 + 16 = 10992!! Tah-dahh - xxDDxx
