Since each number is increased by 4, it would be: 1 + 4 = 5 + 4 = 9 + 4 = 13, and so on. Or, 1 + x = 5, 5 + x = 9, 9 + x = 13 . . .

Translate this problem to an equation and solve The sum of the squares of two consecutive positive even numbers is 20?

Call the first variable x, then the next one will be x+1. Your equation is thus: x2 + (x+1)2 = 20. Your next steps would be to open the parentheses for (x+1) squared; add similar terms; and solve the quadratic equation.

What are two consecutive integers whose sum is 45?

Two consecutive integers means one is 1 more than the other integer. You can solve the problem by letting x represesnt one of the integers and x + 1 the next integer. Set up the equation and solve: x + (x + 1) = 45 (next simplify) 2x + 1 = 45 (next subtract 1 from each side of the equation) 2x = 44 (next divide both sides of the equation by 2 to solve for the first integer) x = 22 (this the first integer, the next is x + 1 which is 23) The two integers are 22 and 23 (22 + 23 + 45).
