Actually, he was never excommunicated. In fact, he wanted till he was on his deathbed to publish his work because he was slightly paranoid. In fact, he actually studied canon law (the the internal ecclesiastical law governing the Catholic Church). Lastly, Catholic scholars spoke on his work to the pope and cardinals, and the pope (the only man who has the power to excommunicate people) never considered doing.
p.s. excommunication has nothing to do with damning someone to hell. It is the declaration that a person is no longer a part of the church community.
