take a cake and chop it in two.
Play dominoes with them. I'm not sure how old 2nd grade is, as I'm UK, but dominoes is how I got to understand numbers at a very early age.
Constantly talk about numbers and sharing things out between people.
More exposure to number thinking will help.
children see pattern better than numbers, and dominoes was the link from that to number for me.
