What are prism used for?

In Ophthalmics, prisms are used to shift an image without altering its appearance in any way. A prism will displace an image away from its base, or towards its apex. The purpose of doing this is to overcome the double vision experienced by some people who have a squint by making the two images seen (one per eye) fuse together.
