The 5 sines might refer to orbits of the 5 classical planets that can be seen with the naked eye. They are Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter & Saturn. Earth is not included in this ancient system. In antiquity, there are 7 classical heavenly bodies which adds the Sun & Moon to the list. Anything moving in an elliptical or otherwise cyclic pattern, such as planetary orbits can be extrapolated as a sine wave.
