In scientific notation, a number can be written as

a × 10b

The b is the base which can be any integer and ais the coefficient which is any real number. The number acan be called the mantissa or the significand.

Some people also use the term mantissa when dealing with logs so it may cause a little confusion. For that reason, some avoid it.

In normalized standard scientific notation, the a is greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10.
