The number system we use as in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.... is descended from the Hindu-Arabic Number System, although there are still some minor differences, that's where it comes from. Primarily Western Arabic Numerals.

There were other earlier uses of base-2 numbers, but Leibniz is given credit for the binary system in use, today.
