Captain Matthew Webb was the first person to swim across the English Channel, completing the feat on August 25, 1875. He swam a distance of about 21 miles from Dover, England, to Calais, France, in a time of 21 hours and 45 minutes. Webb's achievement made him a national hero and inspired many subsequent long-distance swimmers. Tragically, he later died during a swimming attempt in the Niagara River in 1883.
