I am not sure in what depth you would like this answered but Copernicus was the first to show evidence that the earth orbited the sun and not vice versa which was what scientists at that time believed.

Copernicus encouraged a rethink of the current view of the way planets move among the fixed stars. His theory was an alternative to the ancient theory of Ptolemy. It was eventually rejected in favour of Johannes Kepler's theory but Copernicus has the credit for starting the line of thought that eventually led to modern astronomy.

Why did the Catholic Church ban Copernicus' book?

A:Copernicus' book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres), was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books by a decree of the Sacred Congregation of March 5, 1616:This Holy Congregation has also learned about the spreading and acceptance by many of the false Pythagorean doctrine, altogether contrary to the Holy Scripture, that the earth moves and the sun is motionless, which is also taught by Nicholaus Copernicus' De revolutionibus orbium coelestium and by Diego de Zúñiga's In Job ... Therefore, in order that this opinion may not creep any further to the prejudice of Catholic truth, the Congregation has decided that the books by Nicolaus Copernicus [De revolutionibus] and Diego de Zúñiga [In Job] be suspended until corrected.

How was the heliocentric theory created?

Heliocentricism was first proposed by Aristarchus of Samos (circa. 270 BCE), who concluded the Sun was hundreds of thousands of times larger than Earth and was the center of a system in which the Earth revolved around it. His work is largely lost today. In the 16th century, however, Nicholaus Copernicus formulated a heliocentric model of the solar system in which the Sun was at the center. Known as the "Father of Modern Astronomy," Copernicus's work was fundamental in establishing controversial ideas of the Earth revolving around the Sun, and gave substance to Aristarchus's earlier theory. Though Copernicus stirred up controversy, his publication of the book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), he began what was known as the Copernican Revolution and contributed to the scientific revolution. His book is often considered a major mark in the history of science.
