That is used as the contrast ratio measurement. It's designed to measure the the different levels between white and black. Generally the higher the number the better the black levels that the TV can displayed. The problem with this number is that there is no industry standard for measuring this meaning it is only useful when comparing TV's within the same brand. i.e. Samsung to Samsung, Sony to Sony.

For the most part that number can be ignored
