Answer

Feu d'enfer, literally "hellfire," is a French military term used by Napoleon where massive artillery/cannon fire would be concentrated on a small and specific area of the enemy lines prior to a ground assault. The feu d'enfer would be deployed with the intent to weaken enemy lines and lower enemy morale with concentrated and devastating artillery fire so that the ground assault by friendly forces on the target area would be successful. This artillery method is mostly employed on entrenched enemies/fortified positions/enemy strongholds/or already weakened enemies in an attempt to rout the enemy entirely.

In the Battle of Gettysburg of the United States Civil War, General Longstreet under General Lee ordered a feu d'enfer on General Hancock's center lines before launching what is now infamously known as "Picket's Charge."
