Usually mu is the symbol for the mean of a probability distribution. It is sometimes used as the average of a dataset (also called the mean of the dataset), although I prefer to use "x bar".

How do you figure sigma or mu in statistics?

Sigma is used to represent the standard deviation of a dataset. The calculation is rather complex, but if you think of it as the "root of the mean of the squares of the differences" ... rms of differences ... it might make more sense.Enter "standard deviation" on you search engine of choice for details.
