Yes it is done all the time. But first you need to find out how many amps the house load is. Then you need to have it hooked up with a proper transfer switch. Don't try the plug in the dryer trick. That will get you into some VERY big problems. When something goes wrong. Have it done correctly or don't do it.

Pick your connected loads carefully and for the short periods of the power outage, you will not be inconvenienced to any extent. Freezers and refrigerators do not need to be connected if the outage is less that five hours. The furnace is a good bet to connect if it is the winter time in the northern hemisphere. The TV is a must.
