In the metric system, each measurement is ten times smaller or larger than the previous or next measurement.

For example, a millimeter is ten times smaller than a centimeter. A centimeter is ten times smaller than a decimeter, and so on. This chart may be helpful

The column on the far left lists the measurements in order from largest to smallest, top to bottom. The three columns on the right list the name of the measurement and the abbreviation.
