There are a couple of things you have to know first:

-- 1 gallon = 16 cups

-- 1 minute = 60 seconds

Now you take your fraction 3.5 gal/min and you multiply it by ' 1 ' twice.

(Remember that a fraction with the same thing on the top and the bottom means ' 1 '.)

(3.5 gal/min) x (16 cup/gal) x (1 min / 60 sec) = 3.5 x 16/60 = 14/15 cup/sec

(That's 0.93333... with never-ending 3s.)
