35 + 3/5 needs to have common denominators to be successfully added together. Since 35 is a whole number we can simply place it over 1 which keeps the same value. So now our problem looks like this:

35/1 + 3/5. Now we need common denominators, 1 and 5 are both common multiples of 5. Let's multiply 35/1 to make it a number over 5.

35/1 (5) + 3/5 is now 175/5 + 3/5 which equals 178/5 which reduces to 35 and 3/5.
