#2 ; bring to a common denominator

#3 ; bring numerators to equivalent values

#4 ; add/subtract numertors as appropriate

#5 ; place over denomiator

#6 ; bring back to a mixed number.

Hence

Step 1' 4 1/2 - 1 2/3 = 9/2 - 5/3

#2 ; 2 x 3 = 6 ( common denomiator)

#3 ; 9 x3 =27 & 5 x 2 = 10 (Equivlent value numerators)

#4 ; 27 - 10 = 17

#5 ; 17/6
