Solve by substition 4x plus 3y equals 1 y equals 2x plus 8?

4x + 3y = 1y = 2x + 8 Take the first part: 4x + 3y = 1y 4x = 1y - 3y 4x = -2y x = -y/2 Substitute x in second part: 1y = 2x + 8 1y = -2y/2 + 8 1y = -1y + 8 2y = 8 y = 4 Substitute y into either part: 1y = 2x + 8 1(4) = 2x + 8 4 - 8 = 2x -4 = 2x x = -2 Therefore: x = -2 y = 4

Why does y plus y equal 2y?

When you have a variable by itself either it be x or y there is always an invisible place holder before it. So a normal "y" would be "1y". So when you put 1y + 1y you get 2y.

What is 2y-3y?

What was a 1-y draft classification in the Vietnam war era?

Wasn't a "1-y"...there was a "1-W" which meant a "conscientious objector performing an alternate function in lieu of military service" (like maybe the "Peace Corps"). A "1-A-O" was a conscientious objector who could be inducted (drafted) but could only serve in non-combat roles (medics & chaplin service as two examples). There certainly was a 1Y classification during the Vietnam War. I was classified as 1Y in October 1968 as a result of high blood pressure during my induction physical. 1Y meant "qualified for service in the event of war or national emergency". As that war was never "declared" as such, it was a permanent deferment.
