LociA locus (plural loci) is the position on a chromosome where a gene is found.

A useful analogy would be the address - 'Gene for brown eyes' is the name, '23rd gene' is the house number, 'Chromosome 4' is the street. (these are not necessarily true for this gene)

locus - precise, exact place, position. (Compare with location). Please note that locus is a very obvious borrowing from Latin and unless one really need to use the word, it may sound pompous in English.
