But in nursing, Homan's sign is used to check for deep vein thrombosis. The patient's knee is flexed at 90 degrees and the nurse dorsiflexes the patient's foot at the ankle. If the patient feels pain it's a positive sign that there could be a thrombosis and further testing is needed.
