It is a way of presenting data for a set that can be divided into two categories with the aim to make it easier to compare the two subsets. An example could be the weight of boys and girls in a class - where you might want to see if there was an obvious gender difference.

The stem runs down the middle of the diagram, the leaves for one subset (boys) would go on one side of the stem and those for the other subset (girls) would go on the other side.

What are Stem Leaf Plots?

A stem-and-leaf plot is a convenient way to organize data using numerical order and place value.

How do you find a outlier in a stem and leaf plot?

It will usually be on a stem, all by itself, a long way from the nearest stem.

How do you compare stem and leaf diagrams?

The simplest way is to to a back to back comparison. This is where a single stem replaces the two stems, the leaves for one variable are to the left of the stem while those for the other are on the other side.

How do you find the outlier in a Stem and Leaf Plots problem?

Usually it would be on a stem all by itself, a long way from the next stem.

What is A statistical way of displaying elements in a data set. The first digit is on the left side of a vertical line and the rest of the digits lie on the right side of the vertical line.?

It is called a stem-and-leaf diagram or chart.

What is a stem and leaf diagram?

A stem and leaf diagram is a visual representation of the distribution of your data, similar to a histogram. The advantage is that a stem and leaf diagram is very quick and easy to put together as it uses only the numbers of your dataset. Let's say you had the following dataset: 32 4 36 4 16 23 30 45 31 6 31 29 which is equivalent to: 32 04 36 04 16 23 30 45 31 06 31 29 or looking at it another way: 3|2 0|4 3|6 0|4 1|6 2|3 3|0 4|5 3|1 0|6 3|1 2|9 I've just placed a "|" as a visual way of separating the tens from the units. The numbers before the "|" (i.e. 0,1,2,3,4) will be our "stems". Each corresponding number after the "|" will form the "leaves" and be placed next to the appropriate stem. When you put it together the stem and leaf diagram looks like this: 0|446 1|6 2|39 3|26011 4|5 The most appropriate stem and leaves depend on the particular dataset. For example, the stem and leaf diagram of the following set of numbers: 100.5 100.4 99.9 100.5 101.4 100.1 100.5 101.9 Would look like this: 099|9 100|54515 101|49

Is a stem and leaf plot done the same way with a three digit number?

Yes

Why are stem and leaf plots a good way to show data?

Yes because they organize data in a way that somebody can read it.

Why is it easier to read data in a stem and leaf plot than in a table?

It is not. Different people have different preferences for the way in which they can take in data. I'll take a well designed table over a stem and leaf any day.

What does stem and leaf mean in maths?

It is a special way of plotting data in statistics. See link for more.

Why is a stem and leaf plot is useful?

a stem and leaf plot is so important cause if you turn the plot to the left [counter clockwise] then it will look like an organized graph in order from least to greatest you can find mode, range, and median right a way. glad to help!!!

What is a familiar and convenient way of keeping score of a set of obervations when constructing a frequency distribution table?

TallyYou can extend the idea of tally further to what Statisticians refer to as a Stem & Leaf Plot, which is a simple type of histogram. With a Stem & Leaf plot your tallies are placed in 'bins' according to their value, allowing you to observe the distribution of your data.Let's say you have a data set: 0, 7, 10, 13, 18, 19, 21, 29, 55, 57, 59, 59, 60The Stem & Leaf Plot would look like this:0|071|03892|193|4|5|57996|0i.e. '0' becomes '00' and '7' becomes '07' for the purposes of this Stem & Leaf Plot which needs two digits to illustrate its shape in this way.
