1) all units are based on groups of 10. no need to remember that 12 in = 1 ft, 3 ft = 1 yd, 1,760 yds = 1 mile, etc). Its much easier to convert when you're only multiplying or dividing by 10, 1000, .01, etc
2) water is used as a basis for mass and volume. pure water at a volume of 1 mL weighs exactly 1 gram. the british (or US system depending on whom you want to blame for still using it), has few actual "standards" to base their measurements off of. there are a few ... for example the inch has now been standardized to be exactly 2.54 centimeters. (yes, that's true)
