A block is the distance from one road intersection to the next. It is not a fixed distance. This distance is often about 100 meters, but it may vary from one block to the next, and of course from one city to another. Brasilia, I have been told, has "superblocks" of about 500 meters each - 5 times the distance otherwise considered typical.
Number of blocks walking is an American expression expressing distances in a city. Blocks do not have a set distance; however in New York City, the average length of a north-south block is 1/20th of a mile, or 264 feet. An east-west block is about 1/5th of a mile, or 1056 feet.
