The Cartesian (not cartician!) plane is defined by two lines (called axes). One of these is called the x-axis or the horizontal axis and the other is called the y-axis or the vertical axis. Each of the axes is a number line and the two meet at right angles at the 0 points on the lines, and the point where they meet is called the origin. The Cartesian coordinates of any point in the plane is an ordered pair of numbers. The first of these numbers gives the distance of the point from the origin along the x-axis and the second is the distance along the y-axis.

Cartesian coordinates can be extended to more dimensions by adding another axis (orthogonal to the existing ones) and adding another number to the set of coordinates.
