In general terms an average is to get a number that is a good representative of a set of numbers. Usually we think of an average as being got by adding all the numbers and dividing by the amount of numbers. Strictly speaking this is the arithmetic mean. A median, which is the middle value, and the mode, which is the most common number, are also forms of average that can be used by statisticians.
The AVERAGE function.
To be technically accurate, no function does this. The answer you are looking for is the AVERAGE function. It divides by the amount of cells that have values in them, not by the amount of cells. In most situations, all of the selected cells have values in them, but there are cases when they don't.
