There may not be a direct English equivalent for jalebi, but they appear to be very similar to American Midwestern "Funnel Cakes," which are eaten with powdered sugar or maple syrup.
There is no history behind Fafda & Jalebi to be consumed on this day. I am sure, there was a great businessman once upon a time who somehow managed to get this association (in name of God) and its been followed blindly. Kudos to him/her.
