To me, it's a way of simplifying a number.

For example, I go on a car journey of 32.561km. When talking to my old Mum, I might say I went for a car trip for about 30km. In other words I rounded to the nearest 10. Later on, talking with my son, I might say, I went on a 33km car trip. It's an approximation that depends on the circumstances (certainly in practical terms).

Using money, say something costs $292.45c. I could say it's about $300 (rounded to the nearest $100), or $290 (rounded to the nearest $10) or $292 (rounded to the nearest $1)

It is very useful.

Decimal numbers in calculations often display a spurious degree of accuracy. By removing these unnecessary digits, rounding can simplify mathematical operations without compromising the results.

How should numbers in questions and answers be rounded on WikiAnswers?

There are no set rules about rounding numbers, so when rounding numbers, mathematical rules about rounding can be used. For example, 14 would be rounded to 10, but 15 would be rounded to 20. For another example, 1144 is rounded to 1140 and 1145 is rounded to 1150.
