If you line numbers up, it's the middle number in the group.

If you have the numbers 2, 23, and 11, when you line them up in order, they would be 2, 11, and 23. 11 is in the middle, so it would be the median.

But, let's say you had the numbers 5, 3, 9, and 6. When you line them up, it would be 3, 5, 6, 9. Five and six are the numbers in the middle. You can't have two medians, so the number would go in between 5 and 6. The median in 5.5 or 5 and a half.
