here is subtraction problem...

9 - 4 = 5

here is an addition of the opposite

9 + -4 = 5

both these equations are true and mean the same thing. when you subtracted you are actually adding the negative of that number. the negative means to put a minus symbol in front of that number and that number is the amount of units it takes from below zero to get to zero.

What are the 4 basic operations of arithmetic?

The 4 basic arithmetic operations are addition, multiplication, division, and subtraction. subtraction is the inverse (opposite) of addition the same way around and the same concept as division and multiplication.

Why is division opposite of multiplication?

Because mathematically it's the inverse operation, the same way that subtraction is the "opposite" (inverse operation) of addition.

How are addition and subtraction the same?

Addition is a sum and so is subtraction. So there's your answer!

Can subtraction be rewritten as addition by adding the opposite?

Yes. Subtraction is the same process as adding the opposite. For example, take the expression 9 - 4. The opposite of 4 is (-4). 9 + (-4) is exactly the same as 9 - 4. This relationship is a fundamental concept of early math development, and is often poorly taught in the primary grades.

How are addition and subtraction stories alike?

Addition and subtraction can be thought of as the same thing because subtracting a negative number is the same as adding it and adding a negative number is the same as subtracting it.

Why is it that when subtracting an integer gives the same result as adding the opposite?

Because of the definition of addition and subtraction. When looking at a real number line: when you add you move to the left or up, when you add the opposite of a number you move in the opposite direction.

Is the process of addition and subtraction of radical expression with like and unlike terms the same?

The process is the same for addition and subtraction. The process is totally different for like and unlike terms.

How is subtraction and rational numbers are different from adding?

They are different in the same way that subtraction of integers is different from their addition.

Do addition and subtraction have the same operations?

No,, they do not. Why would anyone have two operations that are the same?

Why when subtracting a negative number must you change the subtraction sign to an addition sign?

Because a negative negative is the same a a positive, and because of the definition of subtraction and addition.

Which operation of arithmetic is the inverse of addition?

Subtraction is the inverse operation of addition. Adding a number and then subtracting the same number will bring you back to the original value.

Is adding and subtracting polynomials the same?

Addition and subtraction are inverse functions.
