Letters such as "n" are used as variables - placeholders for numbers. Depending on the context, it may mean:

  • Any number. For example, n + n = 2n means that for any number, adding that number to itself is the same as twice that number.
  • An unknown number, often a number you have to figure out. For example: "Solve 2n + 1 = 13" basically means: "For what value of n is the equality true?" If you replace "n" with the correct number, the equality is true; if you replace it with any other number, it isn't.
