...Negative tropism is a change in text of a song due to mishearing the lyrics or inaccurate memory of the lyrics. It results in multiple versions of songs after a while. It is very common in English and Scottish balladry, as well as in Appalachian ballads.

tropism = growth

positive tropism = growing with something

negative tropism = growing against something

eg

positive phototropism - growing towards light (plant shoots/coleoptiles*)

negative phototropism - growing away from light (roots)

positive geotropism - growing according to gravity (roots)

negative geotropism - growing against gravity (shoots/coleoptiles*)

*coleoptiles = another name for shoots.
