"Scale" is a term used for calcium deposits.
In areas where the water is high in calcium the calcium will often come out of solution where the water pressure falls to zero. That means white hard deposits of scale will accumulate on faucets. The accumulation grows over time until it is removed usually manually. The short term for this accumulation is "scale build up."
