It was the main allied invasion of Europe. It was undertaken by the USA and the british empire. (Made up of Canadians, British, Indians etc). Was seen as the key to defeating the Axis powers in Europe. By dividing their forces over a wide area.

Also had forces from occupied countries. I.e. Polish, french, Greek etc involved in the fighting.
