A polygon is an enclosed plane area whose boundaries comprise straight lines. So the area must be enclosed. However, the boundaries themselves may or may not be included in the definition. If the boundaries do not form part of the polygon then it is open; otherwise it is closed.This is analogous to a < x < b is the open set, (a, b) and a <= x <= b is the closed set, [a, b]. In the first case, the boundaries, a and b are not part of the set/interval, whereas in the second case they are.
