This is how I solved it:

-5j-13=22 taking away (subtracting) 13, is the same as adding a negative13, in algebra, you never subtract, you add negatives instead, so first you change your original equation to this:

-5j + -13=22 in algebra, this type of equation is called a 2-step equation. Anyways next you add the opposite of your lonesome number(number without a variable), in this case being the -13, to both sides of the equation. What I mean bt this, is if you have a -13, you add a +13 to BOTH sides of the = sign like this:

-5j +(-13 + 13)=22+13 ---> -5j=35 (no need to say + 0) so now that you have that done, you must divide both sides of the equation by the variable term, DON'T FORGET WHETHER IT'S POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE!!! like this(this is just for this specific equation):

-5j=35

-------- J=-7 the -5 cancels out and 35/-5 =-7, so J=-7 Hope I helped :-)
