I have never heard of compatibility. I'll guess

28 is close to 30,,,, (30 - 2)

87 is close to 90,,,, (90 - 3)

SO 28x87 = (30-2)(90-3) now FOIL

= 30x90 + 30x(-3) + (-2)x90 + (-2)x(-3)

= 2700 - 90 - 180 + 6

= 2436
