the answer is 5 and a half.

first, you look at it like a cake, 5 halfs of a cake is the same as 2 cakes and a half of cake. add 3 cakes to this and you get 5 and a half.

or you could always just divide 5 in half to get 2.5 and add 3 to get 5.5

cake isn't a good way to do it anymore, it wont help you when the going gets tough
