Klagenfurt is Austria’s sixth largest city, located in the south-central portion of the country in the foothills of the Karawanken mountain range, the longest mountain chain in Europe. Founded in the late 12th century, Klagenfurt is home to many historical buildings, and according to legend, was once troubled by a winged dragon in early medieval times. In the summer, Klagenfurt plays host to the Altstadtzauber (The Magic of the Old City) festival. The city is well-known for its theater and museums. Two important attractions in the city’s vicinity are Minimundus, a miniature park on the nearby Worthersee, and the Lindworm Fountain. Minimundus displays 150+ models in miniature of world architecture including the Taj Mahal and Neuschwanstein Castle. The Lindworm Fountain (1593) with a statue of Hercules (1633) is located in the city center. The fountain is the city’s most recognized landmark and commemorate the legend associated with the area. Klagenfurt is an excellent location from which to survey southern Austria.
