a square but once and a while it might be a triangle. It can be any shape you wish and it will be appropriately called either a square pyramid or a triangular, or hexagonal or rectangular or pentagonal pyramid etc etc. If the base is an equilateral triangle and its 3 faces are also equilateral triangles, it has a special name. It is called a Tetrahedron. An Oblique Pyramid is the name given to it if the 'apex' (the point at the top') is not directly and vertically above the centre of it's base. A pyramid which has portion of it 'sliced off' in it's upper portion , is called a Truncated Pyramid. If you have a cooking type pie dish with sloping sides, and turn it upside down, it will have a shape which is called a 'Truncated circular Pyramid'.

A pyramid base is square and climbs with 4 equal angles (less than 90 degree's) forming a point at the top.
