For Length, the Egyptian cubit is one of the oldest. In hieroglyphs it was shewn as an arm, and is considered equivalent to about 52 inches. It was divided into 7 palms, each of 4 digits. For a modern adult, 52 inches is close to the distance from a fingertip to the opposite armpit. No doubt is was standardized against some authoritative figure.

But Roman cubits were a different length.

A carat was another old measure, based on the seed of the carob. Sill used in measurement of the weight of a diamond.

And a foot is considered to have been based originally upon the foot of a (you guessed it!) a prominent person.
