Suppose you and your friend go to a Pizza parlor, then the shop owner divides the pizza into say 8 slices, then each of you gets 4 slices, that is 4 slices out of a toal of 8 slices

It is like saying that each of you got 4/8 (four out of 8) slices or essentially 1/2 pizza

Now if three of you go to get pizza, you cannot divide 8 slices equally among three, so you ask the shop owner to divide the pizza into 9 equal slices. That way each of you will get 3/9 (three out of 9) slices or essentially 1/3 pizza

Fractions are used to deal with situations where you have to divide a WHOLE thing into several equal parts and deal with them
