The "new math" came into being around 1880-1900 but was not taught widely taught to grade school students until about 1955. New math is based on the fundamental unifying concept of sets and classes.
"Modern algebra", also called "Abstract Algebra" developed over many years but the name began to be used about 1935.
The big difference is the lack of necessity for an application. Geometry and calculus were motivated by real word problems; modern math does not require any such motivation even though applications are always desirable. The lack of any physical check on the validity of the results requires a more rigorous attitude towards proofs.
Newton was not quite sure what a real number was, but it did not matter to his results.
