Optoelectronics is the electronic technology associated with the use of, detection of, or abscense of light.
Optoelectronics is the study of electronic devices that detect and control light, generally on a sub atomic level with photons. Optoelectronics is also concerned with invisible forms of radiation such as Gamma rays, X rays, ultraviolet and infrared radiation - all of which fall under the broad spectrum of light.

Optoelectronics is the specialization in electronics. It is a field that will soon become dominant in the future. Optoelectronics makes use of light, that is photons to do various task. Long before itself, man tried to use light for communication and also tried to make light do processing. Photophone is an example of light being used in communication which was demonstrated long ago. Light was the fastest. It was obvious that light could perform more faster than electrons. But, however no known mechanism was there to make light compute earlier. Thus the task had fell to electrons. But, with the electronic speed attainable reaching its limits, a new revolutionary technique is required. Here comes the sparking technology of future - Optoelectronics. All you people who have are aspiring for VLSI in M. Tech do keep in mind that VLSI is reaching its full growth and there is little scope for development further. I am very much aspired in this field that I decided to take M. Tech in Optoelectronics. I have even started a blog for discussions on Optoelectronics, its future possibilities, current research works and some seminars on optoelectronics. Now I am doing my second semester in Optoelectronics and communication. Optoelectronic ICs are similar to electronic ICs, they are Optoelectronic integrated circuits. On a chip we have several components manufactured. We usually use silicon as substrate as it is easy to make wave guides required to guide light within the integrated optoelectronic circuit.
