A lightning rod (US, AUS) or lightning conductor(UK) is a metal rod or metallic object mounted on top of a building, electrically bonded using a wire or electrical conductor to interface with ground or "earth" through an electrode, engineered to protect the building in the event oflightning strike. If lightning hits the building it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through the wire, instead of passing through the building, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution.

A lightning rod is a single component in a lightning protection system. Lightning rods are also called finials, air terminals or strike termination devices. The lighting rod requires a connection to earth to perform its protective function. Lightning rods come in many different forms, including hollow, solid, pointed, rounded, flat strips or even bristle brush-like. The main attribute of all lightning rods is they are conductive.

What is the major function of rods in the eye?

The major function of Rods in the eye is that of Photo (light) reception. They are more sensitive to light thn are the cones, but are not color sensitive,The rods are photo receptor cells found in the retina. Their main function is to help the eye see in dim light.

What are rods in your eyes for?

The rods cells are photoreceptor cells that require less light to function, therefore they are responsible for night vision.

What is it that rods detect?

Rods are used for low-light contrasts, unlike cones which detect colour. They are photoreceptive cells found in the retina. Rods function in less intense light than cones, and are involved in peripheral vision.

What is the function of the control rods in a power plant?

The control rod would have a tendency to absorb neutron which is the key for nuclear fission. So by inserting control rods such as Cadmium or Boron rods the reaction rate can be reduced. If we take off the rods the rate of reaction would increase.
