Rather confusingly, there are three Tenth Commandments: Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. or Exodus 34:26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk. or Deuteronomy 5:21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's. Most people take the first entry as the tenth, but in fact only Deuteronomy actually refers to the "Ten Commandments", Exodus calls all ten the Lord's Commandment. The first and last version have similar meaning - and its clearer in the last; its rather unpleasant in the way it lowers the status of the neighbour's wife and servants to that of his property. Its meaning is usually taken to be, "Don't envy your neighbour's property." What may well have been meant by the author is "Don't envy another Jewish man's property." The second version means, "Don't boil a baby goat in its mother's milk."

The Tenth Commandment, "You shall not covet," is a directive against desiring what belongs to others. It teaches the importance of contentment and gratitude for what one has, rather than harboring envy or jealousy towards others. It serves as a reminder to focus on personal growth and fulfillment instead of material possessions or status.
