Space is three dimensional. The axes we assign to them are usually called the x, y and z axes. They don't have to be called that - they can be called anything, but that's the usual system.

As you move along the "x-axis" to the right, the horizontal measurement (the distance from 0) is measured. A "5" means you are 5 units from 0.
