The oldest school in America is the Boston Latin School in Boston, MA. It was founded in 1635 as a school for boys. It is also the oldest public school in America. As legend has it, Harvard was founded a year later to serve as the next step in the education of the boys who graduated from Boston Latin. Boston Latin School maintains a relationship with Harvard to this day, consistently sending numbers of it's graduates to the university that surpasse those sent by schools like Andover or Exeter.

Collegiate School in New York has recently tried to claim the title of oldest school. As stated in the New York Times article "Collegiate's Arithmetic Makes It the Oldest School" on May 5, 1985, in 1984 Collegiate teacher and historian Massimo Maglione found passages in the journal of Collegiate founder Jonas Michaëlius from 1628 in which he stated that it was difficult to teach catechism to Native Americans. This lead them to claim a 1628 founding date. However, as Massimo told the New York Times in 1985, "it seems clear that the school was not an official entity until 1638."
