First, you could find the common denominator of the fractions, which is 6, and change all of them (the fractions) to sixths...giving you 1 2/6 + 3 3/6 + 1 2/6 + 3 3/6 which equals to 8 10/6 or 8 + 1 4/6 which is 9 2/3...OR you could simply add 3 1/2 + 3 1/2, giving you 7, and then add 1 1/3 + 1 1/3, giving you 2 2/3, add those two numbers together, 7 + 2 2/3 and your answer is still: 9 2/3 inches!
