Assuming the height to the highest point is in the centre of the base line (i.e. both slant heights are equal) you can use pythagoras theorem. i.e. splitting the triangle into two right angled triangles

23/2 is 11.5. 11.52 + 72 = 181.25. Sq rt 181.25 is 13.463 units

What is the area of a triangle with base 11 m and height 23 m?

Formula: S=1/2 bh S - area, b - base, h - height S= 1/2 * 11* 23= 126.5

What is the height of a trapezoid with a base one of 23 base 2 of 15 and sides of 8.5 and 10?

I don't know if this is the most efficient way to get to the answer (short of looking at the back of the book), but here goes: Remove a parallelogram with top and bottom of 15 units from the trapezium. This will leave a triangle with base 23-15=8, and sides of 8.5 and 10. The area of this triangle, in terms of its sides, a, b and c, is sqrt[s*(s-a)*(s-b)*(s-c)] where s = (a+b+c)/2 That is, the area of the triangle is 32.77 square units. Now, the area of the triangle is also base*height/2 So 8*Height/2 = 32.77 That is, Height = 32.77/4 = 8.1925 units

The base of a triangle exceeds the height by 4 feet if the area is 218.5 square feet find the length of a base and the height of the triangle?

Let the base be x+4 and the length be x: 1/2*(x+4)*x = 218.5 square feet Multiply both sides by 2 to eliminate the fraction: (x+4)*x = 437 Multiply out the brackets: x2+4x = 437 x2+4x-437 = 0 Solving the above by using the quadratic equation formula will result in: x = -23 or x = 19 so x must be the latter because dimensions can't be negative. Therefore: base = 23 feet and height = 19 feet Proof: 1/2*23*19 = 218.5 square feet
